In Greek mythology, Actaeon, while out hunting, stumbled upon the goddess Diana in the woods as she was bathing. Enraged, she turned him into a deer. He was then killed by his own hunting dogs. This painting was inspired by the myth.

I was inspired by Ellsworth Kelly’s Red Yellow Blue paintings to try this concept in a still life, balancing the flatness of Kelly’s paintings with the need to convey the form of these objects through use of value and chroma in a still life.

I was up on the north shore of Lake Superior last summer and did a quick painting which I decided to develop a bit further on a new canvas. I liked the almost abstract color blocks of this shed and its roof, and I still like that element.
